Unsure where to start sorting out your sex life? Stepping into the Hero’s Journey could be a great start for you …
Conceptualised by Joseph Campbell mid-last century, The Hero’s Journey was the result of his analysis of global religions and folk tales of different cultures. He drew similarities between how they were structured, and identified a ‘monomyth’, which is a common feature of all the most enduring tales.
Indeed, following Campbell’s model helped George Lucas to create one of the most successful movie franchises of all time. Campbell described 17 parts of the monomyth. Not all monomyths have to contain 17 parts, my example here has 12 parts; but in essence, the Hero’s Journey consists of 4 stages:
Stage 1: The Call for Change:
Here, you, the hero of your story, live in ‘the ordinary world’. But you are dissatisfied in some way and hear a call for change. This call could be from a sense of dissatisfaction or a deeper longing for more or better. There is still doubt and you might ignore the urge for self-discovery a few times before you turn to answer that call. And this is when you seek and choose a mentor to help you make the changes you want.
Stage 2: Stepping into Unknown:
In this stage, you take the first steps into ‘the special world’ of risk and uncertainty. You’ll meet unforeseen obstacles that test your resolve for change. You’ll be confronted by your own shame, old beliefs, out-of-date patterns, traumas, and fears. It’s here that you’ll seek support to gain new techniques, skills and make changes that may not make sense at first but can help you to expand your knowledge of yourself, of others, of intimacy, desire, and better relationships.
Stage 3: The Initiation:
You have stepped into this unknown journey either alone or with the assistance of a helper. Eventually, you reach the centre of your adventure where you must face trials and complete tasks from which you overcome your obstacles and gain your reward! Your adventure could be the discovery of your own unique pleasure, joy, and sexual enlightenment. Your ordeal could be the tasks of discovering, unlearning, and discarding what is no longer right for you, and reaping the rewards could be the discovery of what works for you, and practicing and celebrating your newfound skills.
Stage 4: The Return:
This is where you return to ‘the ordinary world’, but you are changed, different; because you now have knowledge, skills, and experience. Through your own diligence and commitment, you have gained access to your own unique sexual freedom, joy, and empowerment! The benefits of which, will improve your quality of life; for you and those around you.
