I love language and the way it affects our neuro circuitry, which in turn affects the way we feel about ourselves and behave towards ourselves and others.
To me the very word ‘resolution’ brings to mind a fixed jaw, a stiff upper lip, a test of endurance, I feel it is about standing to attention, and doing what I am supposed to do!
This does not feel very kind for anyone, least of all you!
The word I prefer to use is ‘Intention’ Intention brings to mind a thoughtful consideration of all of the facts before choosing a way forward. It feels more easeful and choiceful and is about being the way I can be!
And this is the essence of it – when we lead with the body; when we ‘feel into’ what the body wants and let the body chooses what is best for it, we can begin to drop the forceful doing of resolutions and choose the gentler being of intentions that work with the body, that help us to be. So the body may say no to the high stress of your career and yes to discovering mindfulness that helps your body cope with the demands that your work brings. Your body might object to sudden changes in diet but, if you ask and listen, your body would certainly tell you what would be good to eat today.
Our mind may force the body into doing too many reps or laps but your body may be whispering ‘walk in the mountains’ or ‘go to the pool’ as gentler more meaningful ways to exercise. When we listen to our body in all areas of our lives, our quality of life improves exponentially.
My body and I know this for sure! Especially when it comes to self pleasuring or intimacy. Your mind may be saying I’m going to perform now and try to satisfy my partner! but your body may well be saying ‘I don’t feel safe’ or stop trying to make me perform!’ or ‘what I really need is to relax, feel connection and have some slower sex.’
I’ve been on this journey with my body – trying to make it fit into smaller jeans, to be thinner here and firmer there and to sexually perform for partners so they would think I was an amazing lover and feel satisfied and want to stay with me. And it is so painful. And I can’t tell you how much better my whole life is now that I have stopped with the mind-based self-punishing resolutions and live instead by intentions that my body supports and chooses.
It is my wish for you too, to leave behind the punishment of the resolution cycle and live the grace of being with your intentions. It’s a journey, it is not easy but it can be easeful.
